Seventy-four veterans won House seats Tuesday night. Eight others were locked in races still too close to call Wednesday afternoon. Even if veterans win all the outstanding races in the House, the percentage of House lawmakers with military experience will remain unchanged: However, the number of female veterans, Democrats with military experience and younger veterans with experience in Iraq and Afghanistan will rise. But the percentage of veterans in Congress is still higher than the greater population, just 8 percent even after almost two decades of war. A legacy of war

The ritual has happened annually for more than half a century — but the tomb, also referred to as the Tomb of the Unknowns, and the day have been intertwined for even longer. The day now known as Veterans Day originated with Armistice Day observances marking the anniversary of the end of World War I , which became an official holiday in the s.

For that reason, many nations that participated in the First World War will also be marking its end — often called Armistice Day or Remembrance Day — on Saturday. Pilgrimages to the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington — and parallel pilgrimages to such tombs in cities around the world — likewise quickly became an Armistice Day tradition for U. Harding leading the ceremony. As TIME later reported , even as early as the selection of the body to be thus honored, the tomb has always been a place of great significance in the American imagination:

Welcome Veterans, Military and Families. At AARP we value the freedom and rights secured by veterans, the military and their families. Your service and sacrifices will never be forgotten.

Or, perhaps you have recently hooked up with someone with this mental disorder? In either case, you undoubtedly want to be supportive. You want to help your partner get the best treatment possible for his or her PTSD symptoms. However, if you’re uncertain as to what PTSD treatment should entail, especially if you’ve been told your loved one suffers from complex PTSD–perhaps because he or she is a war veteran–you’ll want to read this self-help book written especially for you, the partner of the PTSD sufferer.

This isn’t to say reading this book won’t benefit the sufferer or other family members, for instance. But it targets your needs and addresses you specifically. After all, PTSD changes relationships in ways that are often challenging and painful, wouldn’t you agree? It hardly stops there, though. If you are in this latter category, you may be coping with a partner who has suffered long-standing PTSD—perhaps stemming from childhood physical or sexual abuse, because she was a victim of military sexual trauma MST , or due to the fact he’s a veteran who never received treatment for PTSD because we didn’t know about PTSD at the time–as, sadly enough, happened with Vietnam War veterans.

10 facts about America’s veterans

Today, we offer you some of their stories. In the past week, we’ve heard from not only veterans, but also from family members of veterans, both living and deceased; from doctors who work with the VA; from journalists who’ve covered the VA; and from various contractors and private citizens who deal with the VA in various capacities. With all of their input in mind, we’d like to make two points about what we’re trying to do: The problem is one of processing benefits claims, and the resources that we choose to dedicate to processing claims.

Doctors and other medical professionals who work for the VA are not the source of this problem. To be fair, we’ve also heard from people who’ve worked processing VA benefits claims, who allege that vets often try to rip off the government for benefits.

Dating a combat veteran is hard. “Hard” is an adjective that means “requiring a great deal of effort,” in case you were wondering. Which makes me rethink the adjective I just used to describe what dating a combat vet is like.

Pull away from other people and become isolated What is the treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder? If you show signs of PTSD, you don’t just have to live with it. In recent years, researchers have dramatically increased our understanding of what causes PTSD and how to treat it. Two types of treatment have been shown to be effective for treating PTSD: Professional therapy or counseling can help you understand your thoughts and reactions and help you learn techniques to cope with challenging situations.

Research has shown several specific types of counseling to be very effective for treating PTSD. Medications can also be used to help reduce tension or irritability or to improve sleep. The class of medications most commonly used for PTSD is called “selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors,” but a doctor can work with you to figure out which medication works best for you. They can help you understand and change how you think about your trauma and how you react to stressful memories.

What can I do if I think I have posttraumatic stress disorder? In addition to getting treatment, you can adjust your lifestyle to help relieve PTSD symptoms. For example, talking with other Veterans who have experienced trauma can help you connect with and trust others; exercising can help reduce physical tension; and volunteering can help you reconnect with your community. You also can let your friends and family know when certain places or activities make you uncomfortable. It helps to talk with them about how I feel.

In some cases the improper withholding dates as far back as The Department of Defense DOD is sending letters to the eligible veterans this month, stating the amount of the disability payment and telling them what to do to receive a refund. Survivors of veterans who would have been eligible for this refund may also apply. These are people who served in combat and were disabled in combat, and they deserve the full amount of what the military should pay them.

Veterans can either file a traditional Amended U. Individual Income Tax Return IRS Form X for the year in which they received the disability severance payment and reclaim all the money mistakenly deducted, or they can apply for a flat-rate refund using a simpler option on the same Form X. The flat-rate refund may appeal to veterans who aren’t able to locate their original returns for the year in which they received the payment.

In some cases the flat rates could be less than the amount veterans would receive if they filled out a complete amended return. The DOD says veterans who do not get a letter may still be eligible for a refund. The documents should include the exact amount and reason for the disability severance payment and a copy of either the VA letter confirming eligibility or a determination by the service that the injury related to the severance payment directly resulted from armed conflict while engaged in extra-hazardous service, during simulated war exercises or by an instrumentality of war.

Taxpayers usually can only claim refunds within three years of the date a tax return is due, but thanks to the law, veterans will have one year from when they receive the DOD letter to claim the money they are owed.
