The canal was originally built so lumbermen could float timber from the shores of Lake Mitchell to waiting sawmills on Lake Cadillac.

Northwest What was once slated to be a controversial subdivision is now a unique island preserve thanks to the Little Traverse Conservancy. Oden Island, located south of the village of Oden, juts out into Crooked Lake and is the home to large old-growth trees and fragile wetlands. When a developer proposed crowding 34 homes on the east half of the island, the Conservancy orchestrated a response in that included an outpouring of support and donations from communities and families to protect the natural side of the island.

Both tent and RV sites are available only minutes away from their main resort. They offer a range of services, including a restaurant, private beach, lake cruises, horseback riding, marina boat rentals, and a gift shop. All of the campsites have full hookups, a picnic table, and fire ring, and some also have views of the lake. They have over campsites , each with a picnic table and firebox, varying from full hookup sites to primitive ones hidden in the woods.

Tents, RVs, and even cabin seekers can find peace and quiet here. They have lakefront sites for RVs with full-hookups and a beautiful natural surrounding setting with wildflowers, trees and shrubs. Park in one of their level sites with concrete pads and check out all 17 of their adrenaline-inducing rollercoasters.

The new campground opens June Reservations can be made beginning Thursday, Feb. All campers must be self-contained because there are no restrooms or showers. All sites include water, sewer and electrical. Most visitors will be able to see the sun set over the lake from their campsites. One of the sites is barrier-free. The tent-only campground has 10 sites on the Lake Michigan shoreline.

The sites are designed for campers to walk a short distance to sites. There is a common water source and vault toilet in a central location. There is no electricity, modern restrooms or shower. The design of the campground came from campers’ input both at the park and online, the state Department of Natural Resources said.
